Warning Alert:

vacationtechnician.com
World Watch Advisory™
06/30/04 01:55 GMT

Potential for terrorist attacks remains high in East Africa. Carefully evaluate travel plans in the region.

Locations affected by this alert: Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Eritrea, Djibouti *, Somalia *

The potential for terrorist attacks in East Africa remains high. On June 29, 2004 the U.S. Department of State renewed a warning to its citizens about the ongoing threat in the region.

Similarly, on June 25 and 10, the U.K. and Australia respectively warned citizens that Kenya and other countries in East Africa face a high threat from terrorism.

Travelers to east African destinations (including Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda) should carefully evaluate their plans accordingly and take steps to ensure their personal security.

Supporters of Al-Qaeda and other extremists are active in East Africa. Terrorist actions may include suicide operations, bombings, and kidnappings. Terrorists may target airports, seaports, foreign missions and softer targets, such as tourist sites, shopping areas, restaurants, places of worship, hotels, schools, resorts and large outdoor events.

To reduce your vulnerability, maintain as low a profile as possible. Do not wear clothing that readily reveals your nationality. If possible, limit time spent at places that Westerners are known to frequent and vary your routes, times and modes of travel. Do not disturb suspicious objects or packages; immediately report them to the authorities. Foreigners in remote areas or border regions where military or police authority is limited or non-existent face a greater threat of becoming the target of attacks or kidnappings.

Foreign government facilities in east African countries may temporarily close or suspend public services for security reasons. Contact your country's nearest embassy or consulate by phone before visiting the facility if you are in need of emergency assistance.
