Namibia an arid wilderness (normally!). Tourism drives the economy in Namibia and with a fantastic mix of dynamic European and African citizens (like the Himba) who support the Paradigm Principle conservancy ethic. Profits from your visit remain in the local communities and can be distributed directly to the members, for local social programs, or returned to the conservancy to expand anti poaching operations.
Because a healthy wildlife population is a big tourist attraction, poaching is down, animal numbers are increasing, and efforts are going into maintaining the natural environment that supports wildlife. And perhaps most important, indigenous people like the Himba, whose lives were for generations largely controlled by outside governments, are regaining local control over the future of their communities!
The Namib Desert occupies the country. Namibia is about 3 times the size of Germany. The famous Etosha National Park is a well managed wildlife reserve, consisting of vast plains and the Namib Rand Nature Reserve, Southern Africa’s largest private conservation area, is situated on the edge of the Namib desert, close to the Sossusvlei. One can enjoy nature walks, searching for rock paintings, horse riding or scenic drives through the varied landscape. Quite spectacular is the dunes landscape - wide sand and gravel plains, endless savannah, interrupted by impressive mountains and red sand dunes and desolate but beautiful Skeleton Coast. Desert dwelling elephant and black rhino, mountain zebra, klipspringer, oryx antelope, springbok, ostrich, jackal, lions and the bat-eared fox roam the Namib. The elephants are not alone among the big game animals, as the western subspecies of the black rhinoceros Diceros bicornis bicornis is also found here. Together with the Etosha National Park, the Kaokoveld desert region is home to 98 per cent of the world population of this subspecies. A large variety of birds ensure superb birding.
