Charter vs Hotel Barges

Some barges can he booked on a hotel basis, meaning you may book individual cabins on most departures. Other barges are available for private charter which means the entire cruise focuses more on your group's individual interests.

Cruising the Canals and Rivers of France

In general, canal cruises emphasize relaxed, leisurely travel in remote countryside areas. The actual miles traveled on a canal trip are relatively few, with frequent opportunities for spontaneous waterside activities such as walking, bicycling along towpaths and local excursions. River cruises cover more ground, more quickly. They too offer a relaxed onboard atmosphere, but the emphasis shifts towards a more comprehensive itinerary, with most activity taking place on sightseeing tours away from the barge.

Barging in Tandem

Any combination of the Amaryllis, Fleur de Lys, Hirondelle, Alouette and Napoléon can be chartered to cruise in tandem to accommodate groups provided we are given sufficient time. Traveling in Tandem allows for the greatest possible flexibility (2 or more vans at your disposal) and the opportunity to enjoy the amenities of chartered barges and the gastronomical talents of different chefs.

Barging and Biking

Guided bicycle tours can be arranged for the serious biker in both Burgundy and Provence. The barge is an ideal base from which to explore the changing landscapes and the historic towns and sights. The majority of biking is done close to the river and each barge is supported by a van to help you catch up if the others get too far away. The advantage of a barge vacation over a more conventional hotel/bike vacation is the flexibility you have and the opportunity to relax without the need to pack and unpack or to deal with hotel formalities - everything is on hand.
