RE: Your Jet Exhaust..

On a mile for mile basis air travel is similar to car travel in terms of emissions. However, because a long haul return air journey can very easily be 6,000 miles, the emissions add up relatively quickly.

The largest negative impact of your holiday travel is the greenhouse gas emissions from your air travel.

The Vacation Technician Company offers a convenient way of both calculating these emissions and “repairing” its negative impact on Earth's atmosphere. Each vacationtechnician.com client is consulted regarding the carbon created by their flight. Clients are then asked to make a distance calculated "offset" or financial contribution which then funds a CO2 reduction project in a less financially fortunate country; professionally managed by Climatecare.

Air Travel and Climate Change
Air travel is one of the fastest growing (unregulated) sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the world.

Example: during a typical flight from Europe and the USA to Africa: from London to Johannesburg each passenger is responsible for 2.5 tonnes of CO2 while if flying from New York, this rises to 3.5 tons!

Some Important Points to Consider

Planes travel in the sensitive upper atmosphere. Jet engines release a cocktail of greenhouse gases such as CO2, nitrous oxides and water vapour. These greenhouse gases have differing strengths and differing residence times in the atmosphere. The net result is that the effect on global warming is greater than if the fuel was burnt at ground level. Climate Care’s calculations take account of this effect.

The second main problem is that when we get in an aeroplane, we tend to travel long distances. On a mile for mile basis air travel is similar to car travel in terms of emissions. However, because a long haul return air journey can very easily be 6,000 miles, the emissions add up relatively quickly.

Q: How can you offset your Holiday Air Travel Exhaust?

A: There are two ways you can help repair the damage you cause to the climate while on holiday:

1. Book your travel with vacationtechnician.com and your Climate Care "Carbon Offset," will be "built-in" your invoice.

2. Clean up your CO2 emissions quickly and efficiently, just by using one or more of the Climatecare.org Carbon Calculators.

Q: What does Climatecare.org do with your contributions?

A: Emissions Reductions Current Projects
Climate Care operates a portfolio of projects. Emissions reductions tend to be bought from the portfolio, rather than from a specific project. The main focus of the projects is to achieve a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. However each of Climate Care’s projects also has wider benefits for local communities or the local environment. Below are examples of the projects that Climate Care has funded over the last year:

1. Low Energy Lighting, South Africa
We are providing CFL lamps at no cost to municipalities and housing developers in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The lamps will reduce the demand for electricity which is generated in coal fired power stations, thus reducing CO2 emissions. Reduced electricity will also mean lower bills for householders.

2. Reforestation, Kibale National Park Uganda
Climate Care is contributing to restoration of the rainforest in the Kibale National Park in Uganda. The project aims to re-create the original canopy by planting and managing 30 species of local trees. The area is also an important wildlife habitat (it has one of the highest number of primate species of any forest in the world, including chimpanzees) and the project provides employment for local communities.

3. Efficient Stoves, Bangladesh
Working through the Intermediate Technology Development Group, Climate Care is funding a series of workshops to show householders how to build energy efficient cooking stoves in Bangladesh. The improved stoves have the twin effects of reducing the amount of fuel that is used and of burning it more efficiently. This reduces both CO2 and non CO2 greenhouse gases that are produced in traditional open fires. Other benefits of the project include improved air quality in households and less time spent by householders gathering fuel.

As part of each project, Climatecare.org commissions a report by a third party that verifies the emissions reductions that are expected to be achieved by that project.

Overview of Climatecare.org

Climatecare.org in the News: timesonline.co.uk

• Climate Care was conceived 6 years ago as a service for individuals and organizations to reduce their contribution to global warming.

• Climate Care raises funds by selling greenhouse gas emissions reductions (referred to as CO2 offsets). It then develops projects that reduce emissions, ensuring that the total reductions achieved match the amounts sold.

• The projects are either technology projects that reduce emissions at source or reforestation projects that sequester CO2 from the atmosphere. The technology projects, which are our main focus, can be either in renewable energy or in energy
efficiency. (See below for examples).

• Climate Care sees CO2 offsets as an important way of stimulating carbon reduction technologies. In practice some of the projects have delivered climate benefits far in excess of the directly measurable reductions achieved.

• To ensure the highest standards of environmental integrity, Climate Care’s projects are scrutinised by its Environmental Steering Committee which includes members of NGOs such as WWF and Forum for the Future. It is chaired by Sir Crispin Tickell, formerly the UK’s Permanent Secretary to the UN. The Committee does not have executive power but offers advice and guidance. Members may resign if they feel that we are not performing, which would be damaging for Climate Care.

"To me the question of the environment is more ominous than that of peace and war. I'm more worried about global warming than I am of any major military conflict." - UN Weapons Inspector Hans Blix, March 14, 2003.
