The US Government is pleased with measures taken by Kenya to deal with insecurity. Speaking in Mombasa, US Ambassador William Bellamy said yesterday the Government's efforts were impressive.

"Kenya is now a safer place than it was six months ago," Mr Bellamy said.

At the same time, the American envoy pledged his country's support to Kenya in the fight against terrorism, adding that a lot of progress could be achieved through cooperation between the two countries.

The envoy said he was in no position to predict when the US travel advisory against Kenya would be lifted, but added: "It all depends on Kenya's progress in locating and bringing to justice those behind terrorist acts."

He called on the Government to step up its anti-terrorism efforts, adding that a real threat still existed in the country.
Mr Bellamy was speaking in Mombasa when he called on Mayor Taib Ali Taib.

At another visit to Provincial Commissioner Cyrus Maina's office, the ambassador said the US Government will support Coast schools to boost public welfare. He said consultations were going on with the people to identify priority areas and the assistance needed.

"We want to support both secular and Islamic education at the Coast," he said. Mr Bellamy said his government wanted to increase its activities at the Coast and had identified education, health, including the control of Aids and other infectious diseases, as priority areas.
