Cheap airfares: Great deals or expensive mistakes?

Finding and buying a bargain airfare can be difficult. We will show you how to avoid getting your fingers burned.

What you have to remember about cheap tickets is that the trade-off is flexibility. The cheaper the ticket, the more restrictions. The more flexibility you want, the higher the price.

Here are some VT hints to help you understand the bargain fares market and enable you to work the system to your advantage. Of course, each airline has its own rules and conditions. What follows is only a general description of the terms you are likely to encounter.

The cheapest tickets are the most restrictive
If you buy the cheapest ticket, don’t expect a refund if you have to cancel or amend your dates of travel. Don’t book the cheapest fare unless you are absolutely sure of your plans. If accident or illness prevents you from traveling, then that is a claim for your cancellation insurance. Otherwise, you might as well throw your ticket away.

Watch those deadlines
To fly at a lower price, you often have to book your flights a minimum of three to four weeks prior to departure. As you get closer to your date of departure, the price goes up. Once you’ve made a booking, you usually have to make a financial commitment by purchasing the ticket within 48 to 72 hours. We call this the “ticketing deadline.” In extreme cases, ticketing must be completed within 24 hours. Some airlines allow up to a week. An airline may automatically cancel a booking if it sees that ticketing has not been completed within the deadline. That is to stop people from holding a booking to the last minute, and then canceling.

Saturday night rule and minimum stays
Airlines are not interested in giving business travelers a break on prices, which is why they impose the “Saturday night rule.” Almost universally, you must include a Saturday night through a Sunday morning in your destination to qualify for a lower price. If you don’t include a Saturday night in your itinerary, you can expect to pay much higher fares.

You also need to be aware of the rules concerning the length of stay at your end destination. Each fare type has a minimum number of days for your stay away and a maximum number of days. In addition, you may be restricted to flying only on certain flight numbers and on certain days of the week.

Cancellation and amendments
Only first class, business class and full-paying economy class passengers can change or cancel their reservations free of charge, or with minimal penalties. Canceling or changing a discounted ticket always involves a penalty fee, ranging up to 100 per cent of the ticket cost.

Tax is extra
When obtaining a ticket quote, always ask if it includes airport security, taxes and airline ticketing fees. As a rule, airfares are quoted and advertised without taxes because these can change by the day. Taxes come as a nasty shock to many people. Taxes for a flight to London, for example, cost almost as much as the ticket itself.
