Save the Rhino Trust Namibia In the early 1980's in this vast, emptily beautiful and spectacular Namib desert scenery a savage slaughter of wildlife was taking place. Colonial officials, South African Defence force personnel, hunters in helicopters, pro-Independence guerrillas -it was a free for all. As rhino populations crashed and extinction loomed a group of people (scientists, tribal leaders, journalists, businessmen, safari operators, farmers) gathered together to form a Trust Fund with the aim of stopping the havoc.

The Botswana Wild Dog Research Project is run by a group of ecologists who have been conducting a long-term study of critically endangered African wild dogs in the Okavango Delta of northern Botswana. As perhaps the largest remaining population, this region's wild dogs are crucial to understanding social Wild dogs require large natural areas in which to roam, hunt and raise young. As rural Africa becomes more developed, conflicts with humans will continue to mean declining populations for these predators through livestock conflicts, disease, poaching and road killing. Megan Parker, a researcher with the Wild Dog Project writes, "Our goal is to help understand and preserve predators in a developing world by working with local people and the international scientific community. We are working on research for conservation and management solutions between wild dogs and human conflicts.

Rhino Project Large concentrations of free running wild
rhino have all but vanished from the wilds of Botswana for close almost 100
years. Botswana today has the toughest anti-poaching measures in Africa and
the country is ready for rhino reintroduction to its parks. Recently, Wilderness
Safaris and the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks, have released
five white rhino to the Mombo area, in the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve
and the Okavango Delta.
The donated animals belong to the country and are the start of rebuilding
a national herd. Wilderness Safaris primary objective, as the promoter of
this reintroduction project, is to re-establish this locally extinct and important
species in the Okavango Delta. Due to the success of this project, another
31 white rhino will be released in the wilds of Botswana over the next 12
months. However, there are no black rhino in the country and this needs to
change.
African Rural Schools Initiative
Most rural schools in Africa have rudimentary facilities at best and teaching often takes place under a tree. It is not an uncommon occurrence for African school children to have to do their homework by the light of a candle. It is a credit to them and their teachers that they take such pride in their education that they are able to learn in such poor conditions. These children are the leaders and conservationists of tomorrow, born with open minds and the desire to have a future through education, that would probably have not been available to their parents. In the areas where Wilderness has camps in remote locations with a sizeable population on the boundary of the reserve we have supported the local school financially and taken our guests to visit them who in turn have given generously.
"Children in the Wilderness" To get young Africans interested in wildlife and conservation, the Children in the Wilderness aim is to offer an environmental learning experience to underprivileged children who live in extremely remote villages. This initiative offers children the opportunity to stay in our safari lodges for a week at a time, on structured educational programmes, free of charge. Children learn about a diverse range of subjects, including wildlife, geography, geology, conservation, arts and sciences, theatre, astronomy, nutrition, health and HIV/AIDs. Our partner Wilderness Safaris uses revenue from your holiday to host these children in luxury safari camps for a week at a time covering all costs, including charter flights and forego the revenue from guests over this time. Our aim is to host 1000 children each year. We are confident that this programme will inspire some to become park rangers, field researchers and conservationists as well as inspire self-esteem.
